WHAT IS SHOTOKAN KARATE?
Shotokan karate is a martial art that uses punches, kicks and blocks to help defend yourself. It helps develop fitness, flexibility and confidence. It originated in Okinawa, a small island near Japan before spreading to the Japanese mainland and was founded by Gichin Funakoshi. Over the years it has spread tobecome the most practised style of
karate around the world.

WHO CAN LEARN KARATE?

Our sessions are suitable for adults and children from 8 years of age and above. There is no upper age limit on starting karate and many people in their 40's, 50's and even 60's take it up as a new hobby. We have both adults and children who regularly take part in our sessions.
WHAT DO I NEED?
You do not need to purchase a karate suit straight away and you do not need any expensive equipment. Karate is a fairly inexpensive hobby and our Family Friendly Fees make it extremely cost effective. To start with all you need is a loose fitting top and a pair of tracksuit bottoms.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

All sessions start with a gentle warm up including stretching exercises. Basic techniques are taught along with simple footwork. Your initial introduction to kumite (sparring) is very controlled and safe, the speed and variety of techniques will gradually develop as you become more proficient. You may feel stiff and sore after the first few sessions but this is normal with all new exercise regimes.
